Best Covers Playlist – New Noise Magazine

What makes a great cover of a song? Is it when a cover becomes the preferred, more popular version? I’m looking at you “Tainted Love” (originally recorded by Gloria Jones, not Soft Cell) and “I Love Rock ‘n’ Roll” (originated by glam rock group the Arrows but made immensely popular by Joan Jett).

Or is it when an artist manages to capture the spirit of the original, while still managing to add their own unique take to it? Look at “All Along the Watchtower.” Bob Dylan himself took inspiration from Jimi Hendrix’s version, consistently choosing to play it more like Hendrix’s version than his own.

It’s such a personal thing to take someone else’s labor of love and make it your own. In fact, Frank Iero once said that the most intimate thing a musician can do is cover one of their peers’ songs. So, that’s exactly what this playlist is … a love note from one band to another.

Happy listening!
