“Ten Favorite California Bands”

Pete Steinkopf picks:

X – When we were kids in Jersey, we discovered a lot of West Coast Punk bands from movies like Another State Of Mind, Suburbia, and The Decline Of Western Civilization. X was in The Decline and then I saw their movie The Unheard Music and I thought they were the fuckin’ coolest.

TSOL – The same thing as with X. TSOL was the awesome band the kids went to see in Suburbia. They were so cool and dark. I bought Dance With Me and loved the guitars. Ron Emory is one of my favorite guitarists. Coolest style!

Angry Samoans – When I was like 13 my neighbor gave me a mixtape of punk music he was into. “The Ballard of Jerry Curlan” was the first song on the tape. I still don’t know who Jerry Curlan is but that song is sick.

Operation Ivy – In 1989 we all lived in our first punk house together. It’s a time I’ll never forget and Operation Ivy was the soundtrack to that summer. Energy was blasting in the kitchen every day. At our New Year’s Eve party everyone was in the kitchen stage diving off of chairs and crowd surfing to that record.

Rancid – We heard the guy from Operation Ivy had a new band and went and got the first Rancid record. It was so sick and when they came to the East Coast for the first time, we played together at ABC No Rio in 1993 and they took us on tour the next summer. One of the greatest live bands I’ve ever seen and I’m stoked to play with them again this summer!

Bryan Kienlen picks:

Black Flag – This was the band that permanently changed my life. Hearing them for the first time in sixth grade kicked open a door in my mind to another universe, a better and more real existence.

Dead Kennedys – The blues for our age. The ugly truth set to fast music. Part of the soundtrack to my youth. Helped wake us up to the truth around us.

Circle Jerks – More great music with a message. My political awareness was awakened with these three bands. Plus it was great music to skate to.

Youth Brigade – I first heard “Did You Wanna Die” in an old skate video and have loved Youth Brigade ever since. Great original punk rock with honest lyrics, proud to call them family. Our punk rock uncles.

Descendents – They may have had the deepest and most profound influence on us of all. It’s all in their music and words. Love, humor and everything in between. Realness and humanity.
