Los Angeles-based dark pop singer/songwriter DeathbyRomy recently went on tour to support her new album HOLLYWOOD FOREVER and she was nice enough to share her tour diary with us here at New Noise!
APRIL 25 ⋆ ANAHEIM, CA
APRIL 26 ⋆ SAN DIEGO, CA
APRIL 27 ⋆ PHOENIX, AZ
Phoenix was the first sold out show of the whole tour – the first breath of ease I experienced for this whole thing. Now there have been many more and I’m so grateful for Phoenix being the first. Although the venue was pretty bare bones, it had this dirty gritty underground feeling to it, where you can really feel the energy pulsing between us and the fans. Phoenix goes hard for me so I was stoked to have packed the room out.
This tour has been a whole different experience to anything I’ve done before – being my first ever headline tour, it’s amazing to play for my die hard fans rather than fighting to convert other band’s fans when I’m on a support tour. The freedom and ease that comes with performing for a headline is priceless. It’s been so cathartic because I’m just out here baring my soul with team death. The fans who feel and resonate with my pain, they feel like family. Something that has been amazing though is seeing how many converts I did have – so many people discovered me when I opened for Pierce the Veil and Set it Off, and have become members of team death in the process. That is really gratifying – we as a band & crew work so hard to put on a killer show every time we are given the opportunity to perform. We treat every show with the same respect and ferocity.
APRIL 29 ⋆ DALLAS, TX
APRIL 30 ⋆ AUSTIN, TX
MAY 2 ⋆ ORLANDO, FL
MAY 3 ⋆ ATLANTA, GA *
MAY 4 ⋆ CHAPEL HILL, NC
MAY 6 ⋆ BROOKLYN, NY *
This show was amazing because I got a new lease on life – right around touring Texas, I got sicker than I have been for years and almost completely lost my voice by the time we got to Chapel Hill. That was terrifying and really depressing to be honest- I had been looking forward to my headline tour for so long that it was so hard not to be able to give my all to the show. I was candid with the fans about being sick, but I still gave absolutely everything I could, and they supported and cheered me on extra for still showing up.
When I got to nyc I was lucky enough to be able to see a Broadway specialist doctor who gave me some steroid shots and lung treatments and antibiotics , thankfully my voice bounced back pretty quickly. Elsewhere is such a cool venue because it had a massive screen and the lighting director from the venue is incredibly talented, so it felt more of a production than some of the smaller venues I’ve been playing. Also, I had my friend Von – a sick incredibly underrated local artist – open for me so it felt even more special. At first the crowd was a bit stiff – I called them out and compared them to the stuck up LA crowds – once they heard that they started moving and even moshed! My sister Ella also lives in New York, so getting to see her when I perform there is always a highlight for me.
MAY 8 ⋆ WASHINGTON, DC
MAY 9 ⋆ BOSTON, MA *
Boston was one of the sickest shows energy wise – people crowd surfed and moshed like their lives depended on it. People knew every single word to every song – even from my new album Hollywood Forever that JUST dropped right as tour started. Seeing everyone shout back the lyrics to ‘Kill or be Killed’ – a song I perform with my bassist Earth to Cheska and guitarist Jayden Hammer – was badass.
MAY 10 ⋆ PHILADELPHIA, PA
MAY 12 ⋆ COLUMBUS, OH
MAY 13 ⋆ TORONTO, ON
MAY 14 ⋆ PONTIAC, MI *
Pontiac was a trip. The venue was one of the strangest, smallest rooms we played – it almost felt like a little event hall where you’d put on a school dance. But Jesus do Detroit go hard. I was right up in there with the crowd because the stage was so low, so it felt like we were one. A bunch of people came on stage to perform my song ‘No Mercy’ with me. It was deathly hot in there, like a sealed bottle of of energy and heat ready to burst at any minute. I poured water all over myself and accidentally broke my in ear pack, so couldn’t even hear myself perform, but that didn’t stop me. When a city gives me crazy energy like that, I feed off it and I give it right back. By the end of this set, I was there in the mosh with them. That might have been the most fun I’ve had in a while!
Tragically we learned that one of the venue staff at The Crofoot that we had met that night & had loved our show passed away in a tragic accident immediately after leaving the venue prior to us even taking off ourselves. We are sending love and prayers to his family & his colleagues. The venue was so fantastic and we really appreciated their help and the staff’s energy putting on a beautiful show.
MAY 16 ⋆ ST LOUIS, MO
St Louis.. where to even start. We had to cancel the sold out show because of a tornado. It was actually the first I’ve ever encountered and it was insanely scary. Come to learn we were in the epicenter of one of the two tornadoes that ripped through the city that day. The tornado sirens started blaring and we got out of our van and into a building with just moments to spare – the wind was so strong you couldn’t even see and the power went out so we were submerged in darkness.
Once we emerged, it was crazy to see trees and metal signs ripped out of the ground around us. We managed to make it to the venue and realized they had no power and that we’d have to call off the show. We considered doing an acoustic set but the roads were too dangerous to ask fans to travel to us .. too much debris and the traffic lights weren’t working. I was so disappointed to call off the show, but our fans safety comes first, and I was just grateful that we (the band and crew) had narrowly escaped death that day. I know many others were not so fortunate, and seven people lost their lives that day – my heart goes out to them and the city of St Louis.
MAY 17 ⋆ CHICAGO, IL
MAY 18 ⋆ MINNEAPOLIS, MN
MAY 20 ⋆ DENVER, CO
Denver, Colorado at meow Wolf was the absolute most beautiful show I have ever played in my life. The venue was the most perfect and ornate set up. I’ve ever gotten to play with. Floor to ceiling 360 Visuals everywhere… Incredible sound system and the largest sold out show of my whole career. It truly was a dream. I was fighting the altitude the entire time… gasping and panting for my life, but I tried not to let it show, and I delivered what I believe to be one of the strongest shows of my entire career. The whole venue team was so incredibly helpful and hospitable they made for such an easy show. We had the craziest turnout of fans and the most successful night in merch sales. I truly felt so fucking loved it was unbelievable.
MAY 23 ⋆ SEATTLE, WA
MAY 27 ⋆ SACRAMENTO, CA
MAY 28 ⋆ BERKELEY, CA
MAY 30 ⋆ LOS ANGELES, CA
The story of selling out the Los Angeles venue was much more turbulent than any other sell out on this tour…my home city was one of the hardest to sell out. Downgraded the venue and everything thinking it wasn’t gonna work.In perfect LA fashion everyone who wanted to be there was too late to get tickets. They wanted guest list but no one got it… It was my second time selling out the Moroccan lounge and it felt incredibly full circle to do that with my first independently released project and my largest independently released project since then. Monsters and Hollywood Forever got to share a stage……and the crowd after some teasing got into it a bit more than LA usually does. My parents and all my best friends were there, bunch of industry folks showed up for me too it was a beautiful night! We closed it with an after party at the Rainbow and some of my friends who worked on the album came out and Djed.
