Del Paxton: Five Tips To Surviving A Buffalo, New York Winter

Del Paxton - Ashley Finkney

Del Paxton is an emo/indie band out of Buffalo, New York. The band is a part of the Topshelf Records lineup and are preparing to release their debut full length, All Day, Every Day, All Night. The release is a confident and accurate portrayal of the organic qualities of music. There’s a raw aspect to the band that sounds as if the musicians are playing to keep warm. That is the reason why New Noise Magazine reached out to the Buffalo band to ask for tips on how to survive in an area of the country that is known for the bone chilling winters. Listen to their new single “Take It To The Limit” below and read how to effectively survive Buffalo in the winter months (thank you Ashley Finkney for that chill-giving photo above).

1) Clothes

This is a loaded topic. Everyone’s going to have opinions on the best way to dress for a winter in Buffalo. But unless they agree with us, they’re wrong. Outside the general “warm stuff” attire, I would break this topic into two VIP clothing tips:

Layers – I’m talkin’ 2-5 layers depending on the temperature. Buffalo is super windy. If your body is a temple then you must protect this house… Under Armour ©

Socks – Clean, wool, dry, tall, and thick.

2) False Hope

Here in Buffalo you’ll hear people say things like “Playoffs” and “Championships.” They could be using those words while talking about literally any of our teams and they would be wrong. But it doesn’t matter, we need to believe these words have meaning to us. We know the reality of our teams playoff droughts. But football and hockey season means that winter is coming and we have to pretend that we’ll still be excited about something in January-March.

3) Beverages

Whether they are hot in temperature or they warm you up on the inside. We’re all big time coffee nerds. Dylan roasts coffee and all of us still do or have worked cafe jobs. We drink a lot of coffee and it keeps us warm and happy. Also our bars are open till 4am, I’m assuming people found a way to stay warm inside there.

4) Hobbies

For lots of people in Buffalo and in particular the southtowns, they can expect to get snowed into their house for a couple days. Power might be out and TV is shit anyways. You’ve got to learn to do something. It doesn’t have to be playing music, but do something to distract you until spring releases you from the winter death grip.

5) Travel

This year we’re leaving Buffalo to play SXSW. We’re already looking forward to leaving Buffalo in our jackets and arriving to Austin in jorts made from snow pants. It’s easier to deal with cold weather when you can daydream about a warm trip you’re going to take.
