Feature: ‘HOPE: A Comic For Flint’ Raise Money For Their City

HOPE: A Comic For Flint

This past weekend, music-lovers and comic book-lovers alike in Flint, Michigan came together to celebrate art, music, and community. HOPE: A Comic For Flint brought together five Michigan-based artists and writers to create an anthology of stories in an effort to raise money for the city of Flint. Today, New Noise has the pleasure of premiering an interview with artist Craig Horky talking about the story he worked on.

The idea behind HOPE was crafted by touring musician and freelance writer, Jonathan Diener. In addition to music and writing, Diener has recently picked up in interest in crossing over into the comic book world. His new band, Baggage, have steadily raised money on their own for the city of Flint after the ongoing water crisis. However, Diener decided it was time to bring some friends together to create something truly unique: the city’s first charity comic.

In addition to Diener, the HOPE team includes writers El Whitcombe, Sam Moore, Robb Anthony and Carl Mizell and artists Emily Woodruff, Kadee Spangler, Craig Horky, Michelle Lukezic and Miranda Ireland to bring each story to life. The eclectic array of creators includes freelance music writers, a playwright, graphic designers, a tattoo artist and a comic shop manager. “I asked everyone to be a part of this comic because I loved their work, I knew they were driven and I wanted them to get a signal boost in something that can finally showcase their hard work,” said Diener. “It’s expensive and time-consuming to make a comic from scratch, but for a good cause, we all had the motivation to make it happen. It wasn’t about us anymore. It was about Flint.”

The interviewee in today’s premiere, Craig Horky, is known for creating art for bands like The Menzingers, Lemuria, and many more. Horky’s style is distinct and full of life, bringing an animated energy to the words on the page.
