List: 5 Black Punk Acts to Check Out Now

So, you’re cooped up in the house or at work, watching the world from your window or, more likely, your screen. If you’re feeling a little frustrated and agitated, I got you.

Are you looking for something to rage to? Are you looking for something to jam to? Or just trying to diversify your punk playlists? I’ve got you! I’m going to give you five Black punk bands to check out and enjoy.

1.Death- U.S. Formed in 1971, Death are one of the most iconic punk bands. Full stop. Initially backed by Columbia Records, Clive Davis asked the Hackney brothers to change their name. Upon refusal, Columbia pulled their support. Their tracks “Politicians in My Eyes” and “Keep on Knocking” only had 500 copies pressed. In 1977, they disbanded, but their music remains one of the most iconic discographies in punk history.

2. 340ml- Mozambique. Formed in 2000, 340ml takes its inspiration from ska, reggae, and punk. This band created their label (340ml) to distribute their music and have since signed other artists.

Their second album, “Sorry for the Delay,” their most well-known record, came years after their debut, hence the title. Their unique fusion of sounds gave them the title of “South African Contemporary.”

3. Holders-U.S.- Somewhat elusive and releasing their first record in 2016, this DIY band seemed to manifest out of thin air. Their emo sound with noise influence makes them a match made in heaven for fans of the 2000s emo.

4. X-Ray Spex – England. Forming in 1976, this band took the underground world by storm. Fronted by Poly Styrene, the band was unique in all aspects. Somewhat credited with the inspiration for the “riot grrrl” sub-culture that would come to fruition 15 years later, their music was fiercely anti-consumerism (a pretty good message for recent days).

5. Black Pantera- Brazil. Bursting on the scene in 2014, they brought an intensity to the stage that had been missed for the last few years. With their high-energy songs and no-holds-barred attitude, they’re kicking ass and taking names. If you’re looking to jam, this is the band you’re looking for.
