Happy Pride from New Noise Magazine!
Pride Month celebrations began in 1970 as a tribute to those who protested at the Stonewall Riots, which was a demonstration against a police raid on a gay nightclub.
Fifty-four years later and Pride Month might be more important than ever, as many states are experiencing a heavy surge in the proposal of anti-LGBTQ+ bills, like Oklahoma for example—who, according to the ACLU, currently have 55 bills just in the 2024 legislative season. It’s not a coincidence that Oklahoma is also the state where Nex Benedict was bullied to the point of committing suicide earlier this year.
This Pride Month is whatever you need it to be. If you want to be mad, be furious. If you want to recognize those who have come before us, salute them, but also remember how much work still needs to be done. Advocate for your rights; Pride Month puts a spotlight on the queer community, so use it to your advantage.
But above all, remember to celebrate yourself, your friends, and family.
So, we’ve put together a Pride playlist to help you celebrate with the help from trailblazers of rock, queercore, punk, folk, and everything in between—Queen to Pansy Division to Against Me! and even Lord Friday the 13th and Middle-Aged Queers.
