Ryan Curtiss: Best of Indie 2022

There have been some solid indie releases this year, and while not my favorite genre, there are some gems out there that do it right. Check out my list below!

Anthony Green – Boom. Done.

Anthony Green is a masterful songwriter. Boom. Done. takes a soft approach in delivering lyrics about substance abuse and Green’s struggles with his own demons. It’s a fantastic album that is honest, emotional, and offers some gems that may be some of the best work the singer/songwriter has ever crafted. Give it a listen as soon as you can.

The Mountain Goats – Bleed Out

The folk project of John Darnelle has taken many different shapes over the years, going from a one-man band to a full-fledged rock outfit ready to take on any genre they see fit. Bleed Out still holds that indie-folk badge of honor, yet takes some inspiration from rock and punk. It’s a great album that pays homage to action movies and has some of the best lyrics the band has ever crafted. Give it a listen as soon as you can!

Alvvays – Blue Rev

Alvvays is incredibly fun, pumping out indie pop tracks that make you want to dance.Their latest release, Blue Rev was fantastic, capturing the essence of the genre in 14 tracks for our listening pleasure. Dreamy guitar, and synthscapes line this album from front to back, and if you’re a fan of the genre, you won’t want to miss this. Give it a listen!

Slo TV – Incomplete Structures

The Philadelphia-based Slo TV made an atmospheric album that flew under a lot of radars, which is a shame. Incomplete Structures was a masterpiece of an album, and I was beyond happy that I got to review it earlier in the year. If you haven’t listened to this album, do yourself a favor, and give it a listen. It may just be one of your favorites of this year too.

Tim HeideckerHigh School

Tim Heidecker, half of the comedy duo Tim & Eric, has been releasing music for years now that is inspired by ’90’s alternative and indie. The comedian puts his humorous antics behind him to make really good music, and High School did a fantastic job of capturing a moment in his life that most people can relate to. Stop what you’re doing, and go listen to High School!
