The Week in Review: Five New Records to Check Out

Week in Review

From Full Bush, Arca, and Gas to Beauty Pill and Rid Of Me, here is all the new noise you may have missed from this week!

Full Bush – Movie Night (Brutal Panda Records)

Philadelphia post-punk quartet Full Bush have released one of the best genre-bending punk records of the year with Movie Night. The opening track, “Spooky,” introduces the record with a chilling, nearing gothic vocal performance. “Sweet N Low” has a bluesy feel that pairs with snarky spoken word vocals.

The title track is the most ferocious of the bunch, evocative of a late-’80s post-hardcore sound. There’s a little bit of everything on this record, so everyone should find at least one track to love.

Movie Night is out on Brutal Panda Records.

Arca – KicK iii (XL Recordings)

The experimental electronic musician hailing from Venezuela Alejandra Rodriguez, better known as Arca, has returned with a number of pieces in the KicK series. KicK iii is quite possibly the most experimental and best of the bunch, although that’s a difficult decision to make.

A beautiful mix of soul-crushing, digital noise that rivals even the heaviest of Death Grips records in intensity, this record is boundary pushing to say the least. It’s a manic display of frenetic musical passages, digitally distorted riffage, and off the wall vocal performances. Not one to miss!

KicK iii is out on XL Recordings.

Gas – Der Lange Marsch (Kompakt)

Few have pushed the boundaries of electronic music like German composer Wolfgang Voigt, best known for his musical project Gas. In the ’90s, his records, along with the likes of Aphex Twin, dominated the newly emerging and little understood genre of ambient music.

After a 17-year hiatus Voigt has now released three records to pair with this new era of Gas, each better than the last. Der Lange Marsch tops them all with ease. An absolutely pummeling display of ambient creativity, each track feeds into the next with a lulling intensity.

Der Lange Marsch is out on Kompakt.

Beauty Pill – Instant Night (Northern Spy)

Beauty Pill are a little late to the game when it comes to Trump-era political records, and maybe that’s already become a tired cliché, but few have approached the topic with this much swanky energy. The post-punk core of this band’s sound so effortlessly pairs with the ensemble of brass and wind musicians collected to perform on Instant Night.

It’s an incredibly groovy effort that swings from one track to the next. Occasionally crafted with the meticulousness of a symphony, the EP can, at times feel like a magnum opus of sorts.

Instant Night is out on Northern Spy.

Rid Of Me – Traveling (Knife Hits Records)

Rid Of Me pull out a searing noise punk performance on Traveling. The band aren’t afraid to show their softer side at times on this record, which makes the heavier moments all the more intense. Tracks like “Fun” have a hypnotic post-rock aspect that still retains all of the heavy darkness this group pulls off so well.

As a debut this record is pretty bold in it’s diversity of sound. It can be both a noisy riff fest and a darkly introspective psychedelic piece. Do yourself the favor of giving this a listen. You won’t regret it.

Traveling is out on Knife Hits Records.
