From John Dwyer and Viagra Boys to Worst Party Ever and Nick Cave, here is all the noise you may have missed from this week.
John Dwyer, Ryan Sawyer, Greg Coates, Wilder Zoby, & Andres Renteria – Gong Splat (Castle Face Records)

In the midst of the ever-prolific Oh Sees front man’s discography comes this collaborative record that pulls from the depths of the Los Angeles underground. Gong Splat leans heavily on its Krautrock and free-jazz influences, managing to sound like a nasty collaboration between CAN and Sun Ra.
Ranging from freak noise passages to heavily improvisational glitchy synth free jazz the record is absolutely sizzling in creativity. There are times when self-indulgent jam records absolutely work and without a doubt this is one of those times.
Gong Splat is out on Castle Face Records.

Viagra Boys – Shrimp Sessions 2 (YEAR0001)

Live records, at their best moments, should hope to capture the raw nature of a band’s live performance. Shrimp Sessions 2 feels as visceral and in the moment as the band has ever felt. This is absolutely as close you will get to seeing Viagra Boys live without leaving your bedroom.
Taking tracks mostly from their latest record, Welfare Jazz, these versions have an extra rough edge to them. Sebastian Murphy’s vocal performance and chaotic energy is virtually unmatched. Fans of the band will absolutely adore this record and for those unfamiliar with the group it’s a great introduction.
Shrimp Sessions 2 is out on YEAR0001.

Worst Party Ever – Dartland (No Sleep)
After moving across the country from Sarasota, Florida to Seattle, Worst Party Ever moved, as a band, into a home they called Dartland. Borrowing that name for their debut record, Dartland the album is a full-blown rock album that takes on some elements of Pacific Northwest indie rock.
Their no-frills approach to songwriting and recording makes for a clean record. Unafraid to give moments of explosive energy and passive beauty, the record excels on either side of the spectrum.
Dartland is out on No Sleep.

New Grass – Scordatura Perforations (Zegema Beach Records)

The one-man project masterminded by Lucio Oquendo known as New Grass has released the most intense record of the month. Scordatura Perforations is a blasting mix of post-hardcore aggression. Teetering on the line between punk and screamo, the record finds moments of pure aggression and Slint like darkness.
The onslaught of gnarly riffs and endlessly tight grooves hardly lets up on this record. The pummeling brutality of this LP is hard to match. Fans of frenetic, off kilter, noisy hardcore will find a lot to love here.
Scordatura Perforations is out on Zegema Beach Records.
