The Week in Review: Four New Records to Check Out

Week in Review

With releases spanning genres from Lavender Country’s Americana to the ambient electronic experiments of Dan Deacon, here is all of the new noise you may have missed from this week.

Lavender Country – Blackberry Rose (Don Giovanni Records)

It’s not often that I discuss country music here, but this is something special. In 1973 Patrick Haggerty released a unique, self-titled country record, the first of it’s kind to feature openly gay songs. The record was left mostly unheard with only around 1000 copies being pressed at the time, but in 2014, the label Paradise of Bachelors reissued the record.

Now, seven years later, Haggerty has returned with an admirable follow-up. The songs were written throughout Haggerty’s life and portray the sorrow and beauty of American life. With one of the most unique voices in country the record takes the classic sound of American country and combines it with a punk attitude.

Blackberry Rose is out on Don Giovanni Records.

Hurrary For The Riff Raff – Life On Earth (Nonesuch Records)

New Orleans indie musician Alynda Segarra has always brought an anthemic, punk-inspired edge to indie music, but Life On Earth brings that to the next level. Preaching and portraying the stories of the unheard, from immigrants to weirdo punk kids, the record really shines a light on the human experience.

The sometimes-eerie synthesizers pulse through the record. Segarra’s haunting voice crawls under your skin with each word. While this is indie music through and through, it traverses genres and themes.

Dan Deacon – Strawberry Mansion OST (Mars Attack)

Strawberry Mansion was undoubtedly one of the strangest, boldest, and wildest films to be released in 2021, if not the past decade. The movie’s brilliance was matched only by famed Electronic musician Dan Deacon’s original score. Finally released as its own record, this is a record that feels like more than just a soundtrack.

It shapes and marks Deacon’s long career of musical experimentation. Using primarily modular synthesizers, the record is uniquely boundless and endlessly creative. If you were looking for an hour of transcendent, ambient recordings, look no further.

Etran de L’Aiir – Agadez (Sahel Sounds)

Agadez have quickly grown into the capitol of the emerging Nigeran music scene. With the meteoric rise of groups like Mdou Moctar, Tinariwen, and Bombino it’s a scene that has exploded. Etran de L’Aiir are one of the original Tuareg groups to emerge, having been around the block since the mid-90s.

In some, ways as godfathers of a scene, the group have grown and cultivated the city’s creative instinct. On their latest album, the group pays tribute to that city. Fans of the genre will be familiar with Etran de L’Aiir’s pairing of traditional Tuareg music with rock ‘n’ roll, but it’s a pairing enacted with extreme care for both genres resulting in a truly beautiful record.

Agadez is out on Sahel Sounds.
