Violet Night transcend the norm of genres on their release Colours Of You. Their pop inspired, harmonious tunes are packed with melodies that glide through the air. “Where We Began” features a catchy hook with chimes ringing through the ambiance, bringing a sense of warmth to the bubbly progression. The track rings light hearted with plenty of sentiment. “Young Guns” has bursting guitars that play off the main framework of the steady beat, allowing the vocals to reign in listeners with the infectious approach.
The entire record is full of sparkling orchestrations, with carefully layered instrumentation that becomes brighter and brighter upon each listen. Their songwriting has utilized clever motifs throughout songs for awhile, as evidenced by previous singles. Colours Of You is the fullest realization of their sound, and it’s a beautiful one at that.
New Noise Magazine is pleased to be bringing forth an exclusive, in depth look into Colours Of You by Violet Night, written by vocalist/guitarist Connor Pohl.
Depths: “Depths” is a song about my own personal struggles with mental illness and how I believe many people suffer in silence. Just because you don’t see someone battling their demons, it doesn’t mean they aren’t.
Young Guns: “Young Guns” is a song of unity: an anthem for the outcasts. It’s for the kids, by the kids.
Where We Began: This song is about the beautiful rollercoaster that is young love, though it’s a bit darker than that. It’s about wistfully looking back on the start of a relationship and how things were, even if they aren’t as good anymore. The opening line “I’ll pray for me, I’ll pray for you, I’ll pray for us” comes from a letter I sent to the first girl I ever dated when I was 15.
Sparks: “Sparks” is a love song. The ending of the song was written while in studio, on the spot. I knew things were going to end with the girl I had written it about and that bridge came out of me in minutes.
North: “North” is about a turbulent chapter in my upbringing and a beloved family member’s drug addiction.
Choir of Your Mind: This song was written at 4 in the morning. At the time I was suffering from insomnia (sleeping sometimes no more than 30 minutes a night). I would go for jogs around town in the middle of the night to occupy my mind. This song came to me on one of those nights while I was running. It’s the closest to madness I’ve ever been.
Secrets: “Secrets” is a song about how it’s difficult to love other people when you struggle to love yourself.
Lions: My Grandpa Earl lost his battle with cancer in a hospital bed in April of 2015 and I missed my last chance to visit him, which is a regret I’ll forever live with and would wish on no one. This is for him. I repeatedly broke down crying while writing this song and was close to tears in the studio while tracking the vocals for the bridge.
In The Night: “In The Night” is about breaking free from a relationship that is destroying who you are as a person. The lyric “You’re counting your roses, and I’m counting the times that I got to kiss your forehead and say goodnight” is about how some people value material things more than they value love itself. The end is uplifting and hopeful, as the relationship’s end was a weight off my chest.
Colours of You: The title track is about having and losing love, knowing it’s for the best and knowing it’s okay to be alone. It’s about the little things during the fallout that remind you of that person.
