TRACK BY TRACK
1) Further Now
What is beautiful to you? This song talks about how beauty is an opinion, how something that is beautiful or attractive to someone, can be unattractive or even ugly to someone else. Our music, the style, the way we perform it, isn’t always attractive to some, but to us it is beautiful. For me personally screaming is an emotional release and something I absolutely love to do, to some people it is ugly and unattractive. I don’t let that get to me anymore, I am who I am and enjoy what I enjoy. I feel like everyone goes through that realization, you have to do what makes you happy. -David Longval
2) Clarity
Clarity, the one thing many of us are constantly searching to find. At one point or another we’ve all tried to be or pretend we’re someone we’re not, whether it’s to fit in or because we’re not comfortable in our own skin. Living day to day without a sense of purpose or feeling hollow is something we’ve all experienced at one time. Individuality is a precious gift that we’ve all been given, no one should feel ashamed or embarrassed to truly represent who they are. The only real approval and expectations people need to seek are from themselves. Each and every one of us guides our own path through life; through the dark times and through the good times. Never be afraid to express who you are as an individual, take every day and make it your own. We all want to find that moment of clarity where we know who we truly are and where it is we are headed in life. -Daniel Matthew
3) Ghostwood
This song means a lot to me because I have struggled with thoughts of suicide, depression and anxiety. I deployed to Iraq and never thought I’d make it out alive. I’m here and I’m healthy and now I’m just trying to find my purpose. I’m trying to find who I am and what makes me happiest. The album itself talks about being yourself and Ghostwood is the moment in your life where you ask yourself “what am I here for?”. -David Longval
4) Greenvale
The meaning of the lyrics to Greenvale can be summed up into one word, emptiness. At one moment or another we’ve all experienced some kind of emptiness that we’re personally trying to fill. Sometimes it feels like a never ending black hole that we’re destined to be trapped in forever. Stumbling through life feeling there isn’t a sense of purpose or ‘a place with solid ground’ is the foundation that Greenvale is built on.
Greenvale is the town where the story of ‘The Illuminator’ takes place. A town inside the mind of the main protagonist where the lines of fact and fiction are often blurred, that seemingly happy place inside all of our minds that we want to be a part of. We all dream of bigger and better things for ourselves, our own Greenvale. -Daniel Matthew
5) Illuminator
When I was 12 years old I had my first seizure, and repeated ones would follow. I’d later come to find out that I had a brain tumor which was the cause. At that moment everything in my life was turned upside down, being 12 years old and told you have such a serious thing as a brain tumor isn’t exactly the easiest thing to process. Living day to day not knowing if it could be your last is one of the hardest things to possibly deal with. I felt like I had lost sight of everything, I needed to find something that could pull me out of that negative space, and that was music.
The lyrics to ‘Illuminator’ were written while I looked back on that dark time where I needed to pull ahead. There’s always a light at the end of the tunnel for people who are willing to push forward and not give up. We’ve all been in the darkest of places at one point or another and falling victim to the darkness and giving up should never be an option. We’re given one life to make the absolute best of, follow your dreams and turn that spark into a burning passion. ‘Follow the light, hold on tight, follow the light, illuminate the night.’ -Daniel Matthew
6) She Bends Her Arms To Look Like Wings
This song is in a perfect spot as the last song on the album because it’s the moment you have realized this is who I am. You’re telling the people around you to accept it and even though you know who YOU are, others around you may not agree and it’s up to them to get used to it or get out. You are in control and you can’t let the opinions of others change your way of thinking. If I myself listened to the people around me I would not be in the position I am. I was told that being a musician was a waste of time, everyone does it, or screaming isn’t music. It’s music to me and most of the people I associate myself with, they either love it or respect it and that’s all you need to surround yourself with. People that love you and respect you, otherwise they can just get out. -David Longval
