It’s brutal, controversial, and deeply diabolic, and it’s … a soap company? When I first saw Sinister Essence on social media, I loved the logo and art, and wondered how I had missed the latest thrash or old-school death metal band to make it big. Turns out, they literally just sell soap.

“I’ve been a metal musician for most of my life, and my wife is a big metal and punk fan, and we were thinking about how there are soap brands out there, but none of them really represented us in terms of our aesthetic,” says co-owner Ben Miller, who runs the company with his wife, Isabelle Hansen. “We came up with the idea of coming up with an inclusive brand for people who are metalheads and punks, but we wanted to make sure it really was for everyone, and we could also give back to the community.”

All of the brand’s imagery, including their logo, call to mind your favorite metal records, making soap shopping more fun than we ever thought it could be. And they have more ideas in the works: “A cow eating a human burger for the vegans, and we’ve worked with some friends of ours who are big activists in the LGBTQ community to work on some designs.”

They also have some plans in the works to try and work with their favorite bands.

“I would love to collaborate with bands; it would be my dream come true,” says Miller. “I would totally love to collaborate with a band like Municipal Waste, maybe a really fun party band, which I feel we’re trying to emulate in our brand, and just keep that metal vibe going.”

So, next time you want a bar of soap that literally bleeds in the shower, or when you feel like treating yourself to something holistic and all-natural, but also brutal as all hell, look no further than Sinister Essence.
