The Spanish garage rock scene holds an international reputation ripe with all-night party excursion festivals, bands with live performances equally high-octane as their recordings, and a knack for honing a staple of American music into their distinguishable sound. One of the critical bands associated with this cultural movement is Doctor Explosion, who’s been on a steady tear of single releases since returning to the garage rock forefront after a decade-plus drought with their latest album, Superioridad Moral. On June 21st, the band’s debut record will see its first-ever LP, Vivir Sin Civilizar, re-release under the watchful eye of their eccentric leader, Jorge Explosion.
First released in 1992, Vivir Sin Civilizar assisted the band in gaining a cult following beyond their hometown of Gijón with its throwback primitive beat of the postwar American garage rock movement and harmonies heard in many British Invasion bands. This reissue is also the first attempt to have the album fully come to the vision Explosion initially envisioned, with remixed production sustaining the original wildbeat spirit of the sessions and enhanced audio quality to meet today’s standards. Alas, the aural aspects of this project aren’t the only thing getting an upgrade. The visual element of the record has a new layout featuring different vintage photos from the original album cover sessions with photographer Luis Hevia, providing fans with a nostalgic trip back to the early 90s Spanish garage rock scene that Doctor Explosion helped define. Additionally, Explosion has dug through the tapes of these sessions and discovered an unreleased song from the times to be added as a bonus track.
This reissue project was not rushed nor with corners cut for instant gratification coming from a record that’s been out of press for over 30 years. Repurchasing the rights ensured this as Explosion was able to rework the album to his original specifics at his Estudios Circco Perroti, and Oscar Goldman’s immortal Six Million Dollar Man quote heftily applies to Explosion’s reasoning for this record’s new transformation. The latest and improved Vivir Sin Civilizar will be released on June 21st through Discos Circco Perroti/Alan Smythee Records on vinyl and through all digital outlets, with pre-orders currently running here.
