Chile On Hell
Though Anthrax are constantly looked at as 80’s thrash metal icons, it appears that the last four or five years have really been the most important of the band’s career. You see, it was around 2010 when the band ended up re-uniting with old vocalist Joey Belladonna that things really began to kick off in a big way. It was around that time that the band started doing the Big Four shows with Slayer, Megadeth and Metallica, as well as the Jagermeister Music Tour with just Slayer and Megadeth. From there, they released their latest album Worship Music in 2011 to rave reviews and in 2013 they released a pretty sick covers album called Anthems. Due to that momentum, the band has basically been on tour for the last three years straight. Now they have a new DVD titled Chile On Hell, which chronicles basically the end of that tour cycle, featuring a May 10, 2013 live show from Teatro Caupolican in Santiago, Chile.
When looking at the DVD before I even watched it, the first thing that stood out was that setlist. It is one that is pretty varied between records, but also shines a pretty bright spotlight on their Among The Living material which they also played in its entirety during that tour cycle. Sound-wise, it’d be easy to forgive the guys for phoning it in due to exhaustion from the amount of work they’ve put in over the last few years, but nothing about the performance on this DVD is lackluster in any way. In fact, I’d say that it really seems as if the band has only gotten better as they’ve gone on when comparing this to their performance in the Big Four DVD. I enjoyed the DVD all the way through, but I think it’s on classic songs like “I Am The Law” and “Indians” where the band really let their nuts swing, because those two songs feature the most epic mosh parts in thrash history and the crowd predictably responds exactly how they should, including lighting and moshing with lit road flares inside an enclosed arena!
The DVD also features a very cool rendition of AC/DC’s “T.N.T.” and their classic cover of Joe Jackson’s “Got The Time” which also make for awesome moments. I really can’t harp enough on how great the setlist for this DVD is though. The way they incorporate their older thrash gems with newer classics make this definitely one to own for any Anthrax fan.
