The Melvins
Across The USA In 51 Days: The Movie!
(Ipecac Recordings)

Across The USA In 51 Days: The Movie! documents The Melvins’ insane 2012 tour, during which they played one show in every state over the course of 51 days. The travel schedule alone would’ve been grueling, so the fact that the sludge pioneers destroyed audiences’ eardrums every night in a different state is nothing short of miraculous.

This tour featured the Melvins Lite incarnation of the band, consisting of founding members Buzz Osborne and Dale Crover alongside the legendary Trevor Dunn, who tortures a standup bass while Crover and Osborne play knuckle-dragging grunge. The film only dedicates one minute to each state, and each of these segments is comprised of three-to-five-second clips spliced together. Ever wonder what it’s like to step into The Melvins’ ADD-addled brains? Next to listening to their albums, this is the closest you’ll get. Also—spoiler alert!—hilariously cheesy fake explosions and hypnotism spirals are involved.

Buzz occasionally provides smartass voiceovers about things like hipsters in Brooklyn and random encounters with fans in the South; but, for the most part, Across The USA In 51 Days feels like The Melvins’ version of Pantera’s Home Videos. Rather than another band documentary featuring drawn-out live performances and the obligatory band history, this one creates the feeling of hanging out with The Melvins dudes during their record-breaking tour.
