Flogging Molly brought their brand of boisterous Celtic punk rock to Fort Lauderdale for one of the first dates on their “Life Is Good” Spring Tour. The 7 piece band played to a wildly enthusiastic packed crowd that took every opportunity to sing along with their favorite tunes. Flogging Molly played songs from across their catalog including crowd favorites like “Requiem for a Dying Song,” “Drunken Lullabies,” “What’s Left of the Flag” and “Float”.

They kicked off the set with “The Hand Of John L Sullivan” a raucous song off of their newest album Life is Good, which pays homage to one of Ireland’s boxing heroes. The energetic set was led by Dennis Casey’s scorching guitar leads and Bridget’s haunting tin whistle and fiddle work on several songs including “Devils Dance Floor.”  Dave King’s emotive vocals sounded incredible and set the mood for the show.

“Black Friday Rule” showcases the whole band especially guitarist Dennis Casey and drummer Mike Alonso who get to show their skills on the intense solo section in the middle of the tune.

Leading into the title track “Life is Good,” Dave King mentioned the song is about his mother. “My mother passed away a little over a year-and-a-half ago, and she said to me and Bridget, ‘Do us a big favor, will ya?’ she says. “Enjoy yourself, ’cause I surely did.” The song is meant to be a positive song full of joy to remind us all to celebrate life no matter what you have in life.

This is a band that continues to get better and better. It’s not the first time I have seen Flogging Molly play and it will definitely not be the last.

Flogging Molly will be on their “Life is Good” tour throughout March and sailing off on their annual Salty Dog Cruise in April.
