Show Review: Boygenius at The Wiltern in Los Angeles

Words & Photos by Joe Calixto

Earlier this year, on the height of their individual careers, Phoebe Bridgers, Julien Baker and Lucy Dacus announced Boygenius. Just with the people involved in the super project, everyone knew it was gonna be something really amazing. A couple of months after the announcement, the supergroup announced an upcoming EP and a full US tour and released 3 songs that just validated the insane amounts of feels in the arsenal of Boygenius.

After playing across the country for almost the entirety of November. The tour has hit their final destination at the famous Wiltern in Los Angeles. The show has been sold out for months and I could easily say, this was the hottest show this fall.

The venue quickly packed up even before the show started, and if that wasn’t an indication of how epic the night was gonna be then I don’t know what is. Well maybe the bootleg shirts outside was a dead giveaway that this show was huge!

Richmond, Virginia’s best kept secret, Lucy Dacus opened the show, giving Los Angeles a taste of her powerful voice mixed with some of the heaviest riffs in indie. I straight up told my friend “Dude, this is some Thrice vibes, but more indie.” This 1/3 of Boygenius definitely showed the fuck up. Be sure to check out her latest banger of an album Historian.

With a quick change up, Los Angeles’ very own and another third of Boygenius’ Phoebe Bridgers took the stage. I’m sure being from LA, she knows how wild the fact that she’s playing a sold out show at the Wiltern is. Phoebe didn’t waste any time giving us all the jams and gifting us with some of the best renditions of some of these hits. She has been taking over the world for the last couple of years with her daggers to heart anthems but I love that she still has time for the occasional banter. You cannot not love such a person. I highly suggest you play Stranger in the Alps like 700 more times before the year ends.

If there is one person in the world who can silence an 1,850 cap venue right after walking on stage to My Chemical Romance’s “I’m Not Okay (I Promise)”, it’s definitely gonna be Julien Baker.  With an incredible track record of shows in Los Angeles. From playing Eagle Rock’s All Star Lanes, to opening at Chain Reaction in Anaheim, to sold out shows at the El Rey Theater and playing with Conor Oberst at the Greek. Now the Memphis’ singer/songwriter can add selling out the world famous Wiltern to her long list of LA accomplishments. Immediately, this Los Angeles crowd were sent on a trance of pure and raw emotions with her bag full of heart-wrenching songs that just hits right into the feels.

Julien Baker also brought out a friend and the front man of the, goddamn, National, Matt Berninger out to perform a word debut of a song they wrote together. If that shit didn’t spell epic, then I don’t know what will! There is no telling when the Baker train will stop but I am hoping that it never does.

So as the ladies’ individual performances ended, the holy trinity of indie/folk comes back on stage as the supergroup, BoygeniusAlthough it was a shorter set with just over half an hour. Boygenius showed up performing the hits off their EP and playing a very mellow rendition of the Killer’s “Read My Mind.” It’s such a treat to see all three of them together on stage coz they were all just having fun. They even shared a crying moment together and that’s saying a lot.

Boygenius just took over our hearts and is about to take over the world. And my body is ready for that!
