Crystal Ballroom in Portland, Oregon, on October 1 was visited by a scientist of sound! Mike D (along with the backing band 5D) of Beastie Boys fame has put out new music for the first time in years! Since the death of MCA back in 2012, there hasn’t been much new music from him, until recently this year with the release of Thank You, a fun and bouncy album that I feel pulls from Beastie Boys’ Hello Nasty.
The show that night was so much fun, and the showmanship was on point. The set featured songs from the recently released album, with some classic Beastie Boys songs sprinkled in, plus a really good cover of Delta 5’s “Mind Your Own Business.” The venue’s sound was a force of bass and danceable beats that, after I was done in the photo pit, I couldn’t help but dance along with someone else in the crowd (thank you, Sara).
Mike D’s (& Beastie Boys’) sound will always feel timeless, and I’m glad to experience it live with multiple generations of people who feel the same.
