Show Review: Porno For Pyros at Hammerstein Ballroom in New York, NY

Porno For Pyros recently finished the last shows of their farewell tour, the eagerly anticipated “Horns, Thorns, en Halos.” It was a clear, mild night in the city Friday evening at Hammerstein Ballroom on March 8. With only two subsequent performances that weekend, Friday was to be the last time the band played New York City.

Located inside New York’s Manhattan Center a block north of Madison Square Garden, Hammerstein Ballroom is a gorgeous repurposed theater that delivers a uniquely classic atmosphere. The updated concert lighting creates a top-tier concert experience that elevates even the likes of Porno For Pyros. I was very fortunate to have had the opportunity to see the band’s last go-around at one of my favorite venues.

A sold-out crowd continued to pour in as Tigercub provided support for the show. The three-piece Brighton, U.K. rock group released their first EP ten years ago, with their first full-length album released in 2016. This past year they released their third LP to date, The Perfume Of Decay. It’s no surprise that Porno For Pyros and the always encouraging Perry Farrell chose a band on the rise to share a stage in such prolific music scenes across the U.S.

When Porno For Pyros 9p.m. start time hit, the veteran rock group casually made their way onto the stage, taking their respective positions as the lights began to ramp up. Despite the respectable size of the theater, the band took a laid-back, intimate approach to the show. The light drums and mellow soulful bass of “Orgasm” filled the room as Perry’s vocals began to float through the air. Just over a month prior, the band openly asked the hive mind of their social media followers which selections they’d love to experience on this tour. The solid set list did not disappoint! “Meija,” my pick for their Instagram inquiry, landed the fourth slot for the night.

In all, both Porno For Pyros and Good God’s Urge were well represented, including every single from the two albums, both title tracks, and every other fan favorite. “Cursed Female” immediately followed by “Cursed Male” felt natural and appropriate for anyone who enjoys listening to these cohesive albums front to back. The soul and brief bursts of energy of “Porpoise Head;” the power of “Blood Rag” and its tribal rhythms; the punk brashness of Iggy & The Stooges cover, “I Got A Right;” all flowed seamlessly in a well-crafted set unsurprisingly capped with “Tahitian Moon” and their best known hit, “Pets.”

That night, the fans left elated. The celebration spilled outside as a live street performer drummed along to Jane’s Addiction while fans danced on the sidewalks of New York. Porno For Pyros had a great run that ended on a high note. It was ultimately a bittersweet but unforgettable night.

“We missed ya New York! And we’re really gonna miss you after tonight!” – Perry Farrell, Hammerstein Ballroom 3/8/2024
