Show Review: The Breeders and Screaming Females at The Fillmore in Philadelphia, PA

The Breeders are about halfway through their three-month tour of the US celebrating the 30th anniversary re-issue of their iconic sophomore album Last Splash. The Philadelphia show was the first of four consecutive nights with the Screaming Females joining them on major stops in the Northeast including Silver Spring, MD, Brooklyn, NY, and Boston, MA.

Screaming Females always deliver a great performance, but on this night they were particularly on point. As one of the best alternative rock bands in the region, they truly were an excellent pairing with the night’s headliner.

For this Last Splash celebration, fans were treated with the most recognized line-up of Kim & Kelley Deal joined by Josephine Wiggs on bass and drummer Jim Macpherson, the same line-up that recorded, and subsequently toured, the album in 1993 and beyond. Accompanying The Breeders on the road is multi-instrumentalist Sophie Galpin, who finds herself primarily playing violin with a few songs showcasing her on guitar and keyboards. The set included every track of the album in their original order from “New Year” to “Roi Reprise,” making their second song of the night their hit break-out single, “Cannonball.” Kim’s box-covered microphone was used to recreate the unmistakable Ewok-like intro chant live.

After the album had been performed in full, the band continued on to play three tracks from their latest album All Nerve, including “Wait in the Car,” “Nervous Mary,” and “Walking with a Killer,” mixed with classic cuts from the original line-up’s debut album Pod, including “Doe,” and a two song encore of “When I Was A Painter,” and the much loved “Iris” to finish out the night.

The Breeders continue on through the Southwest and up the West Coast to finish the current tour in Seattle by the end of October. Several dates for next year have already begun to surface including four nights at Madison Square Garden supporting Olivia Rodrigo in April.
