The band comments on the song:
“Half of the song ‘Runaways’ is an observation on what happens when you doubt yourself. It’s about how your confidence in who you are and what you can do begins to drop due to constantly comparing yourself to everyone, including the person you love. When you’re with someone amazing you can only look at your own life and realize how short you fall because because of how well you know your innermost workings. You begin to run away from the relationship and subtly sabotage it. But like all stories there are two side, and the other view from the song is how you are affected by someone running away from you because they don’t feel good enough. It’s about how we are all one or both of these people at some point in life. It’s the idea of what could have been that makes us love the songs about complicated relationships and the biography of a wounded heart.”
