Fly With The Unkindness: An Interview with Murmurs

By Jones V

How did you guys get together? What made you decide to start the band?

Murmurs started as an idea in the back of Jerome’s mind. We all had a mutual admiration of each other’s projects, and spoke of creating Murmurs years before it came to fruition. When Jesse, Jordan, and Derek all ended up living in Seattle in the winter of 2011 we decided to start a free- range, locally organic, hardworking band. We jumped into the studio as soon as we felt comfortable with the songs we had created in our few short months together. Powder (the movie) was incredibly influential in the creation of Fly With The Unkindness.

What other bands have the members been involved in? What is your current line-up?

Jerome Sosa: Guitar/Vocals; played/plays in Snuggle!, Pipsqueak, Ratbite, Apeface
Derek Wegener: Bass/Vocals
Jordan Schneider: Guitar/Vocals; did both in No High Fives to Bullshit, Doldrums
Jesse Shreibman: Drums/a little vocals; plays in Transient, The Makai, Black Hole of Calcutta, Oroku

How did you guys come up with the band name?

The name Murmurs always stuck in my head as a cool band name. It can refer to heart murmurs, murmuring conversation, or just a general murmur… it had been a concept I had for a while. This project seemed to be a real good fit for the name.

What is the music scene in Seattle like at the moment?

There are a ton of cool bands, lots of cool places to play, and it has supported us really well so far. The music scene is really large here, everyone is in a band, and everyone knows someone in a band. This makes it hard to stand out and differentiate real people and people trying to be someone they are not. All of our friends in bands have helped us get to where we are now. Without the support of the music scene here we would not be doing as well as we are at this moment.

How would you describe the sound of your recent LP Fly with the Unkindness?

We had only been a band for a few months before recording this LP. These were all of the first songs we learned/created together as a band. We recorded them with a lot of heart, in a very short amount of time. We were lucky enough to work with Brandon Fitzsimons, Conrad Uno (EGG Studios) and Dave Edwardson (Neurosis) in the recording and mastering process. They helped us hone our sound a lot. It’s an authentic, raw recording. We wanted it to sound like we do live.

How did you get in touch with Dead Broke Rekerds?

We had been in contact with Mike in the past about previous records our members had released, but when it came down to this record, our friend Keith Henderson who did art for our record gave Mike a heads up about the new record. Mike was stoked and offered to put it out. It has been an absolute pleasure working with Dead Broke and Drunken Sailor Records. Thanks guys!

What are your plans for the future?

We just finished recording a new full- length that Dead Broke/Drunken Sailor will be releasing. We plan on touring the full US, as well as overseas to help support our release on that side of the pond. We will also be playing dates in Canada.  |
