Industrial-pop stalwart genCAB (né David Dutton) has been busy this year. His latest EP ‘EVERYTHING YOU SEE IS MINE’ (out today) comes hot on the heels of a lengthy North American tour supporting former bandmates Aesthetic Perfection, and is his third release of the year alongside collaborative single “Overdose of Emotion” (featuring X-R17 and Andy Cizek) and full length offering Thoughts Beyond Words.
His latest release leans heavily into the bombastic, anthemic brand of industrial-pop fans know and love, packed to the brim with caustic moments and lots of surprises throughout. We sat down with genCAB for an exclusive track-by-track deep dive into the EP!
1. Soft – “This track is about how our forebearers tend to look down upon their children’s strength. It’s about the weakness exposed by bullying and bigotry, as their ‘best years’ are long behind them.”
2. Cake – “This is an anti-propaganda song. Specifically related to the Russian people recognizing it and overthrowing their leaders instead of harming their neighbors”
3. Wasp Factory – “This one is about a person who recalls their guilt over something terrible they did long ago being whispered to them by an insect that they perceive to be an angel. It doesn’t end well for the wasp, unfortunately.”
4. Only Skin – “An anthem to imposter syndrome. I never felt like I fit the shoes that I wanted to fill, so it’s about making a mask or a suit of armor to protect yourself from everything you think that can see right through you, and recognizing other disguises on other people along the way. It’s specifically about how I see the ones that I love recognizing me fumbling my way through my own neurosis.”

“As a whole, ‘EVERYTHING YOU SEE IS MINE’ is named after a half mile path I built up from a game trail in the woods during the pandemic. All 4 tracks were fresh takes where I wasn’t deliberately trying to fit within my own genre. They were all ideas that I had started on during the production of the last album, Thoughts Beyond Words, that I thought wouldn’t fit onto the album. There aren’t a lot of choruses overall. For instance, ‘Soft’ has a 5/4 chorus with a couple breaks and structurally is more related to a hardcore track. ‘Wasp Factory’ uses a lot of field recordings as percussion that I blended with samples. ‘Only Skin’ was something that I reworked from my previous indie band. This EP as a whole isn’t trying to fit into a shoebox – it just all flowed out naturally.”
