What is “From the Inside” about? Did it draw from any real-life experiences or was it a completely creative concept?
When I first started writing the lyrics for “From the Inside,” I wanted to write about an experience I was going through around internalized homophobia. It sparked from watching a friend struggle with their sexuality and lash out at mine as a way of coping.
Was there a consideration in picking certain sounds to help enhance the song’s concept? How did that affect the process of creating the music for the track?
We are actually all a bunch of weirdos so we are embracing more of that. Finding sounds that line up with the weird noises in our heads is quite a process sometimes, but when we find the right thing, it is the most satisfying “Hell yeah! That’s it!” moment. All effects and sounds we use are something we felt, and then we found what that feeling sounds like.
What makes “From the Inside” Vilify’s most special track to date? Does it challenge the sound of the band or does it continue to reinforce who Vilify are and where they’re going?
Each and every time Vilify writes and records a track, we want it to be our new favorite track, every time. We want every song to push us out of our comfort zone in some way. This track is a testament to “less is more.” We tried to stick with rather simple songwriting so the layers and lyrical content can really sing. In our experience, sometimes doing less is even harder than the most complex of techniques or structures. Deni, Kieran, and Lizi are all incredibly talented musicians, so watching them dial back a little in this track shows a maturity in our writing that we are really proud of.
What are you hoping listeners take away from hearing From the Inside?
I have had moments in my life when I doubted myself due to other people’s influences. Those people usually never had my best interest at heart. I want people to know that whatever you are dealing with, whatever you are going through, you make the final decision. You are the best judge of your own happiness, and don’t let anyone else tell you how you should live your life just because some idiot is unhappy in theirs.
Were there any funny/interesting stories/moments when you were recording and writing the track?
This song was actually tracked completely separately from each other due to availability, which was weird. But, it meant more one-on-one time with our producer Chris Blancato, so it really just solidified how much we all adore him and that he is the unofficial fifth member for us.
Writing-wise, this one started off with me. I wrote the bones of the song in my little office. Guitars, drums, vocals, production, and all, sent it to Deni with the specific instructions to “make it not shit.” I think she did a bang-up job if you ask me!
