Interview: Big Nothing – Their Biggest Something Yet

Big Nothing

Philadelphia based Big Nothing has come up with their second Big Something. Following up on their debut album “Chris,” in 2019, their sophomore album, “Dog Hours,” is out now via Lame-O Records, their debut with the new label. Coming from shared influences like The Replacements, Superchunk and Teenage Fanclub, this album is a little more stripped back but it makes up for it from front to back.

I think it sounds really cohesive as an album for sure,” shares bassist / vocalist Liz Parsons. “I think we’re all in the same melancholy headspace, but trying to retain hope for the future. That mind space shows through the songs.

The band found themselves working from a different approach on their sophomore album, forced to take short stabs to finish the record whereas for “Chris,” they went away for a whole week devoted to putting it together. The pandemic has thrown the idea of normal society out the window, but Big Nothing didn’t let that slow them down one bit. The whole idea behind life is that we have each other and we should be taking advantage of that truth as often as we can. Look at what we can accomplish when we do and use Big Nothing as the perfect example.

Once we got back to collaborating with each other again, it started becoming really fun because life is going on. We’re still working on this; It’s something to look forward to. I think [it] kept all of us happy and calm throughout some of those dark times to have this to work on with each other.
