Interview with vocalist Daniel Wand | By Jameson Ketchum

“This sound is a perfect representation of how I feel,” says Capsize vocalist Daniel Wand of his favorite music and its influence. With a new record, The Angst In My Veins, and a new home at Equal Vision Records, the band is striving to capture that sentiment in their own music. Capsize embodies the DIY work ethic and basement show mentality with their ferocious dramatics and crazy personal lyrics.

What has signing to Equal Vision brought to the table for you as a band?

EVR has opened doors for us that we’ve been knocking on for years. Most importantly, helping us get our record done by the exact person we wanted to [produce it]. Jay Maas is a true legend in our little world, as a producer and musician. Working with him has definitely changed our band for the better.

How do you plan to leave your mark on the U.K. this fall?

We’re just going to bring it as hard as we can. That’s all we know. Our first time in the U.K. was substantially better than we were expecting. This time around, playing to an even bigger scale of crowd should be even better.

Your online presence is really solid. How important is fan interaction?

The fan interaction is huge. We reply to just about everything asked and interact with fans daily. It’s what created what we are doing now, entirely. Right when we started touring super hard, the people who were into us were going out of the way to spread the word on our behalf and got all their friends excited. This band has put in a lot of work, but I give our fan base equally as much credit in our growth.

This style of hardcore has political roots. Does Capsize ever tackle political subjects?

It does, and I think there’s plenty of room for people to continue to do that. I personally do not like looking super deep into politics, so it’s not my place to write anything about it. The record we are about to put out is real personal and only about events in my life. The next record will touch on a few social issues, but still only those that are closely related to my life. I don’t like the idea of singing about anything I don’t know everything about. So I have to just keep it personal.

Besides the new record, what are you looking forward to in the coming months?

Getting back to Europe is the biggest thing. We love touring more than anything, and just want to see as many new places as we can while we still can.
