Interview: Jacob Lilly of Chamber Has ‘A Love To Kill For’

“We figured let’s go all in. Let’s be freaked up; let’s not hold back—riffs, vocally, drums…So we went all in,” begins vocalist Jacob Lilly. “Chamber is just crazy, and that’s always what we want to be. We were scared to turn it into Pure Noise because it’s just all over the place, but we wanted it to be just that. People might expect something, and we just want to be unexpected and do what feels right for us.”

On the band’s spankin’ new, 14-song bruiser, A Love To Kill For, out this July via Pure Noise Records, these Nashville captivators of metalcore chaos are truly not fucking around. The album is an abrasive concoction of smashing grooves, spontaneous and disorderly riffs, harrowing screams, and a buffet of percussive wizardry—a collection of fragmented arrangements pieced together like shards of broken glass to create an astonishing metalcore mosaic.

Lilly says that the title of the record is exactly what you would think it’s about. Lyrically, he explains, “A Love To Kill For stood out to us as something we always wanted as individuals. We all come together and try to write lyrics, but for me personally, I wrote a couple of songs about what we yearn for as individuals that we can’t always get. It’s a lot about loss and what we’ve lost as individuals doing this as musicians. You lose a lot because you’re on the road so much; you go home for a couple weeks; you miss holidays and stuff. That’s what my angle was about, writing and putting words together with Gabe (Manuel). We bounced off of each other a lot because we do so much of the same things together.”

For the new record, Chamber opted to head back into the studio with Randy LeBoeuf, the producer, engineer, and mixer currently making large waves within the world of heavy music for his hard-hitting, explosive production tactics. “He’s the best,” Lilly says. Responsible for producing some of the most decimating releases of 2023 so far (and 2022, for that matter), including the latest from Jesus Piece, The Acacia Strain, and Kublai Khan, LeBoeuf’s production detail on A Love To Kill For makes it another unquestionable heavy hitter to add to the list.

“We’ve done almost 30 songs with Randy at this point,” Lilly says. “He’s a friend, but at the same time, he’s going to make you do as best as possible on everything. He encouraged the band to be the best we could be. He pushed us to the limits, and I also think we pushed him to the limits, because our stuff isn’t easy, you know? He had to work just as hard.”
