Interview: Krooked Tongue – Stronger Than Ever

Krooked Tongue

The last few years, of course, have been very tumultuous for the music industry: the biggest venues and acts taking near-K.O. blows left and right, fans and musicians alike aren’t completely sure of how the new normal will work, and smaller bands have to fight even harder to be recognized. After hitting that figurative and almost literal wall, Bristol’s Krooked Tongue have taken it all in stride, allowing them to regroup and release their newest EP “No Vacancy Hotel.” The band had their EP release at The Louisiana in Bristol and it’s a memory the band will never forget.

Yes, it’s absolutely massive,” remembers bassist / vocalist Oli Rainsford. “We had the EP launch and it was sold out, it was crazy. I was flying over somebody. Somebody thought that they broke their ankle in the mosh pit. It was an amazing night and it’s cool to see all the stuff we’ve worked on over the last few months come to that one climax; It felt like a big crescendo having that gig to celebrate the EP launch.

The crew worked with Josh Gallop (Phoxjaw) at Stage 2 Studios in Bath and turned out to be the perfect fit; he understood the sound the band was going for and was able to push them in the right direction, providing a strong resource in a fresh start situation. The band had released singles over the years but having a cohesive project to work on after the pandemic started to subside a wee bit put them exactly where they needed to be. The pandemic may have turned out to be a blessing and a curse for the art world, but it didn’t stop Rainsford, it only made them stronger.

It’s a pride thing with a lot of musicians but the sooner you swallow your pride and think, ‘I’m just going to do it, I’m going to put myself out there as much as possible,’ the quicker you get [to the] places where people really realize they don’t want to sell themselves [short].
