Interview: Logan Abbey of Cadaverette Talks ‘We Are Everything but… Not Anything’

Cadaverette

The best music understands balance and the art of surprise. It understands how to emphasize the expected and subvert it whenever possible. It pushes against genre and label perceptions. That’s exactly what you can expect from Cadaverette (ain’t she just a cute little cadaver, I guess?). The band’s cornucopia of influences makes for a truly unique and almost liminal sound, where I could use ten genre descriptors and not quite encapsulate what makes the band great. We have Deftones, sludge, jazz, shoegaze, folk, and alt-country, but my closest label would be pendulum-core, where if you think the music’s too light, wait for the heavy part (and vice versa). Balance, cohesion, and just plain great writing go hand in hand for Cadaverette.

Guitarist Logan Abbey shares where the band’s blend of spices came from on their new record We Are Everything but… Not Anything:

“Man, I love that term ‘pendulum core’ [laughs]. It’s all about having a wide variety of influences and exploring uncharted territory. Each album explores different genres and styles I respect. I dug deep into the idea of what makes a song catchy but also does not take away from the integrity of the artist. I started listening to a lot of Americana, and old pop music and tried to build on the dynamics as a band. I feel like we have already found our sound as a band over the previous two albums. The challenge always comes with making the new sounds still ring true to our tone as a band. There has always been a sense of hope, but also hopelessness with our music, and I hope that comes through; life is both those things.”

The new album is available on Cadaverette’s Bandcamp. Follow Cadaverette on Facebook and Instagram for future updates from this exciting artist.
