Contrast and how that can surprise is one of the more interesting aspects of life. I’ll never forget when we took my very prim and posh Canadian grandmother to the mall—She came from literally nothing and barely scraped by with two kids but has always wanted to appear put together; maybe it’s how much the British influenced Canadian culture. Anyway, I brought her into Hot Topic to get a band t-shirt, and naturally, two shop assistants came up that had practically no skin left uncovered by ink or a piercing. I could feel my elder pucker up at the sight. They could not have been kinder and happier to chat anything with me and her. I’ll never forget what she said when we left the store, “I don’t know what I saw in there, but those young people were so nice.”
Duality is at the heart of so many aspects of life. Look at a band with the name Savage Hands releasing one of the catchiest metalcore ballads in recent memory. “It’s Me” is not a George Costanza break-up anthem; it’s an ownership of the ways we’ve let multiple people down and a request for a bridge toward forgiveness. It’s also a much gentler song than anything else we’ve heard from the rising group, clearly a sign of growth and greatness to come, as vocalist Mike Garrow hopes:
“I wanted to portray the battle that one may have with themselves when trying to allow true love in. Whether they have been hurt in the past or not, trusting someone with your heart isn’t always easy for everyone. It’s a big step, and I hope that everyone gets the chance to find their special someone. In my opinion, life is better when you have someone to share it with.”
“There seems to be a connection between the songs and some past trauma that’s been resurfacing,” Garrow adds. “During the writing process, some of the songs would have me stumped a bit when I would get home, and I’d (wonder) why is this coming out like this. But I know the best way to heal is to talk about your feelings and problems. So I’m happy to have this space because not only can I potentially help myself, but it can help others. We just want to represent the harder side of life and how we move forward through it and heal.”
