Spy’s world is blistering with milestones and momentum. Preorders of varied brilliant splatter and colored vinyl are up, and a new record, Satisfaction, drops June 2 on Triple B Records. It’s apparent that Spy are trailblazing without looking back.
Twenty-twenty saw Spy’s first seven-inch, Service Weapon, followed by 2021’s, Habitual Offender—both on To Live A Lie Records. 2021 only supplied two tracks on their ripping split with Maniac on Triple B. But when June yields 10 more songs from the Bay Area chaos summoners, eardrums will be sated.
Pawlak reports that their recent tour “was incredible. Our favorite run yet. We got to hit some new cities and regions we hadn’t played yet, rocked eight incredible shows with one of the Bay Area’s best, Sunami, and enjoyed playing LDB in Louisville for the first time. On this last run, Texas really stood out. Wildest show was in San Antonio with 1000 people on a damn Monday night.”
To add, Spy also saw the owner of their former label, Will of To Live A Lie. “We just saw Will in Richmond, Virginia when we played a show together with another band he plays in, Sentinel. Will is sick, and so are all of his bands!”
Spy are not resting, either. They just toured from March 9 to April 2, and then returned to the road for most of May. One special show will be Maniac from last year’s split. “We finally get to play with Maniac for the first time in Boston on May 21; really looking forward to that show!” Pawlak summarizes the band’s goals for 2023 bluntly. “Tryna hit as many continents as we can!”
The first track unveiled to the world from Satisfaction is “Big Man.” The track boasts the signature sound of raw, menacing hardcore. A killer bass line pushes a gritty, dark, angry sound. With the new 10 tracks, Spy distill their lyrical attack as “the idea of being just as critical of yourself as you are of anybody else.”
Take heed.
