Lionel Richie was onto something when he wrote “Easy Like Sunday Morning.” If you aren’t being dragged to something early, few things in life are better than a comfortable day with whatever in store. Ironically, Sunday Morning pair a sound that perfectly marries that coziness with an album about the varied ways we experience and handle grief. So functionally what does that mean? Eternal Grief in every way sounds, feels, and is like a long, powerful hug from a loved one who is wearing the most comfortable sweater possible. It doesn’t always have every answer, but sometimes momentum and momentary love is the best response. Musically, the band embody the kind of sound we’d call “emo rock” in 2005, though the sound is somewhere between The Movielife, mid-career Taking Back Sunday, and later The Starting Line. All that means is I’m all damn smiles as I pour over the realities of a life well lived.
“To me, music is about connection,” vocalist Westly Benjunas shares. “I know how I feel when I hear a lyric that truly resonates with how I am feeling at that moment and all I could ever ask for is someone else to feel that way while listening to our music. People go to music when they’re searching for something: comfort, answers, peace. We’re all best friends and enjoy being with each other. Because of that, I feel we give each other opportunities to shine and have our own respective moments throughout a song. We also go into writing and recording with the idea of “what is going to serve the song best?’ We also just love each other and have fun doing what we do!”
Eternal Grief is out tomorrow and you can preorder it from Open Your Ears Records. Follow Sunday Morning on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter for future updates.
