Interview: Telekinetic Yeti’s Alex Baumann on Making of ‘Primordial’

Telekinetic Yeti

Doom duo Telekinetic Yeti released their latest record, Primordial, this summer via Tee Pee Records. The release is another slice of delightful, heavy riffage and downtuned delights.

“The writing process started off with me writing guitar riffs—Sometimes I’d record them on the computer and program drums just to get ideas going, and then we’d try out stuff and see if we liked it or not,” explains guitarist Alex Baumann. “We even wrote a few songs just through hamming, and that was kind of cool. Then, as far as recording, we actually recorded in April of 2020. Everything was just delayed big-time, because we probably would have released the album in 2020.”

The sound of the record is summed up pretty concisely by Baumann as “really loud,” and he’s right. “I don’t know, I guess the whole concept of the band was just to see what we could do with two people, and even though I’m just playing guitar, I really try and fill in the bass frequencies.”

In terms of the themes the album includes, one of the big ones is evolution, and another is the current state of our society.

“I just think it’s interesting to think about how in our modern world where we’re a species with technology and everything, it’s interesting to think back to where we came from and where all the millions of years of evolution have led us. It also kind of touches on the themes of alienation in society with COVID, mass shootings, and everything else we’re dealing with as a society.”

The band are also planning on playing shows this summer and fall in support of the record.

“We’re really excited to get this out there and finally play all the new songs in front of people because it’s a super weird feeling to just sit around for two years, not really doing much,” says Baumann. “Then, hopefully, we’ll get another album out in the next year or two, because I already have a bunch of stuff written.”
