Interview: Young Powerhouse Kid Prexy Discusses “Shooting Star”

Kid Prexy

Talented powerhouse Kid Prexy is busy making a name for himself in the contemporary pop, hip-hop, and alternative music scene. The child prodigy was born in Baltimore, Maryland, and is currently 15 years old. With many instruments already learned, the young musician is moving forward with his music to endless possibilities. We recently had a chance to talk to him about his music, influences, and also the newly released song “Shooting Star.” Have a look at the interesting conversation below:

Hello! Can you please tell us how music is important to you?

Music in general can have the power to create emotion and connection with someone. It allows me to speak about how I feel or how someone else would feel in a situation, whether it be love or heartbreak. People can then relate to it. Writing songs about my feelings has helped me get through difficult times and on the flip side let me share my happy feelings with the world.

Who are your biggest influences inside or outside of music?

My biggest influences would be JuiceWRLD, XXXTENTACION, Powfu, and Machine Gun Kelly. Outside of music, definitely my mom and dad.

How long did it take you to write the new song, “Shooting Star?”

Believe it or not, with Kevin, it took us just a couple hours to get rolling on that song. That was the very first time I wrote a song from scratch with another songwriter. He had never done a song with a ukulele before, and I had used one in my happy love song “Pink Blossom Tree.” It was a really fun experience to create that song.

How was your experience of making the music video of “Shooting Star?”

My experience when making the music video was overall amazing, especially since I got to work again with Keaton Jones as the director. He directed my music video for “Stay Away,” and he picked a really dope location to film it. For the animated video, it was hand drawn by Rob Fidel who is an incredible artist and animator. After listening to “Shooting Star,” he came up with the idea to have two cute shooting stars flying through space while they’re falling in love.

How has been your experience working with producer Kevin “Thrasher” Gruft?

He definitely is the guy and works with some of the best musicians in the business. He’s so easy to work with, and I love his humor. I really enjoy working with Thrasher, and I learn so much from him.

From your perspective, how is “Shooting Star” different from your earlier singles?

I feel that “Shooting Star” is different from my other singles because most of my other songs are about heartbreak, and “Shooting Star” really changes it up with how the song is about love at first sight. It has a fun happy vibe to it.

Being able to play so many instruments, which one is your favorite and why? Do you want to learn a new one?

I feel like guitar is my favorite instrument to play, mostly because it’s the main one I use and started playing when I was eight years old. I would really like to start learning the piano because it’s a really beautiful instrument. My little sister has been playing piano for years, so she can help me out.

Among all three of your EPs, which one do you like the most?

It would really be between the one I’m working on now or Lights in the Forest. I just really enjoy the songs in that EP. If I had to pick one, though, I think it would be the one I’m working in now because I really like the pop punk/alt rock genre, and I think it fits my vocals the best. Also, I enjoy the fast pace of the guitar and drums for that style of music.

Lastly, do you think you will ever change the direction of your music? Maybe trying some other genres?

I’m not really sure, but I’m learning and growing every day. I did already move into a different direction with the pop punk/alt rock genre because “Broken Promises” was emo rap; “Lights in the Forest” was lofi/acoustic pop, and this recent EP is pop punk/alt rock. My mom would like me to do Latin songs since she is from Nicaragua, and my grandma lives in Miami and speaks Spanish. My dad thinks I would be good at country music since I sang some Blake Sheldon and George Strait with my acoustic guitar when I was younger. I also live in Oklahoma where country music is very popular. Right now though, I really like writing songs in the pop punk/alt rock genre.

I’m new to the music game and really appreciate you giving me this opportunity to be a part of your magazine. Much love!
