Pet Sounds #56: The Lion’s Daughter Go Out With a Roar, Donate Dough From Last Show to Animal Rescue

Farewell concerts are almost always a maudlin affair. No matter how hard the retiring band tries to galvanize their audience to dance, mosh, and create circle pits for just one last time, man attendees can’t stave off thoughts that this’ll inevitably be the last time they get to see the band play a show. It’s as if everyone onstage and in the crowd are saying goodbye to each other with the knowledge that they’ll never see each other again but will remember all the great times they shared together

That said, at final performances, a metaphorical and sometimes literal cloud tends to hover just beneath the ceiling and permeate the venue’s atmosphere. Unlike Irish funerals, which can be joyous at times, fans filing out of a venue that hosted a band’s last gig often look dejected, shuffling around like they’re unsure what to do next with their lives.

The Lion’s Daughter were adamant that their farewell performance would barely resemble the inescapably dire mood that characterizes most bands’ sayonara shows. It was as if they collectively responded with one of Cypress Hill’s best-known lyrics: “We ain’t goin’ out like that.”

To that end, Lion’s Daughter staged a concert in late June at Off Broadway. It also featured performances by Fister, Sine Nomine, Path of Might, and Furnace Floor Perhaps more importantly, it doubled as benefit show for Stray Rescue of St Louis, an organization that saves and cares for animals with the most critical needs.
