Metallica’s James Hetfield just announced that he is donating 1,000 acres of land to the Marin Agricultural Land Trust.

The famous frontman may have landed in the spotlight for negative reasons in the past, such as the group’s lawsuits against fans that illegally downloaded their music. This time, however, all the recognition he is gaining is about this generous public action. Apparently in the past, he donated 770 acres of land that he owned in a similar gesture.

His family released a public statement about donation:

“Our family is very happy to work with [Marin County Open Space District] and [Marin Agricultural Land Trust] on re-establishing agriculture and maintaining the scenic corridor of the ranch. We believe this is a huge community benefit, and one of our goals is to keep agriculture on the ranch for a very long time.”

Die-hard Metallica fans and those who deny allegiance to the band may not see eye-to-eye on much, but in this case they all have to admit, the gesture makes him pretty cool in the eyes of environmentalists and hiking enthusiasts.
