“When coming up with a video concept for ‘Serf’ we wanted to create something that was fun and reminded us of those almost cheesy pop punk music videos of the late 90’s and early 2000’s that we all love. We met up with Shawn Kosmo, and started to flush out some ideas about escaping the 9 to 5 to some beach, but it all seemed a little mundane. So we added a few twists. It was cold… very cold. Well, really it was only negative 2 or 3, but a cold wind blew off the frigid waters that lapped at our feet. The wind lashed at our faces, and our feet and hands grew cold and numb. But in our shared misery we found a new friendship, discovered a brotherly bond amongst ourselves, and were brought together in our efforts by our common adversary, winter. We hope our suffering brings you joy.” – Knifey
We’re pleased to bring you the premiere of Knifey’s music video for their song “Serf” (watch it below). The track is taken from the band’s latest release beached, which is available for purchase through Bandcamp.
Knifey is known to wash their brand of punk rock in layers of reverb, and have found the perfect visual accompaniment to their nostalgic longing for the ideal California lifestyle and surf rock riffage. The video for “Serf” finds the band at either the most fun, most miserable or most embarrassing day of their collective lives, as they trek down to lake in the middle of winter. The band plays the upbeat and instantly memorable track surrounded by frigid conditions, grey skies, and damp sand. The juxtaposition between the bubbly music and their dreary (but ultimately fun!) music video existence lets the collective personality of the band shine through. They are the rays of sunshine, desperately searching for hope in a winter beach wasteland. Almost like a long lost episode The Monkees, if they were reborn as rock ‘n’ roll loving Millennials. Brash, amusing, and and ultimately endearing. Now, to get these guys some summer heat!
