Emotionally driven lyrics of romance, pure anger and honesty, are not what one typically expects with Folk music, but then again, Matty Carlock is not the typical folk artist. On March 4th, Poor Soul Records released Loveless, the debut solo effort from Matty Carlock, available digitally at every major digital outlet including iTunes and Amazon as well as physically here.
Keeping with the DIY mentality from Carlock’s Hardcore upbringing, Loveless was made 100% from the artist’s point of view from top to bottom including self producing the music video’s for the album’s first two singles “Meet Me on the Parkway” and “Rest Stops”, working hand in hand with the Poor Soul Record team regarding the release and touring all across the country, most recently coming off a tour with fellow New Jersey stand out Sammy Kay.
“The years that led up to ‘Loveless’ were tied together by violence, touring, multiple near death experiences and fighting with bloody fists for a love that was betrayed” says Carlock on the writing process of the record. “I wrote ‘Loveless’ at the same time as my whole life was falling apart. I was left with absolutely nothing but a guitar, isolation, and intense heart break.”

Matty Carlock comments on the song:
“The song was written during a time where I was touring full time in Back And Forth. No money, good ol’ DIY basement tours all over the country. At this time, there was an absurd amount of violence in my life. I couldn’t escape it, I’m not sure if I even wanted to, and I think that makes me a bad person looking back. But we had a community, a family, and it was beautiful. Its a story about friendship. Companionship, and the alley ways love, desire, and passion take you down. A test of will for the ones you love. A call to arms, a celebration that no matter what we have each other, and we’re gunna be alright. We have to be, because we have love and thats all that matters. That fact alone is so beautiful it could bring me to tears.”
