Midwest-based pop-punk band Mighty Vices releases their newest cover of an iconic scene song with their version of “Sweetness.” Their take of the Jimmy Eat World hit mirrors, in many ways, the original. Singer Bryan Bennett captures Jim Adkins soaring vocals to the point you have to double take.
And the musicianship is spot on throughout, aided by squeaky clean production. It’s such a nostalgic cover with enough altercations, like expertly placed throaty screams in the end, that will draw listeners back just like JEW’s original.
“It’s a song we all love, but for me personally it’s a big call back to my time growing up, especially the high school years,” bassist Adam Szmurlo says. “As a generally shy and quiet kid, a lot of Jimmy Eat World spoke to me, but this song in particular was on repeat. Not only is it a banger, but it also felt all too familiar when you dive into its meaning. Seemed like a perfect fit for Mighty Vices to shine a little bit of light on the past.”
In the fall, Mighty Vices performed a Las Vegas show leading up to the When We Were Young Festival. It wrapped up a cross-country tour in support of Social Order, headed by Metro Station’s Mason Muso. Douglas says the band has major plans for the upcoming year.
“We are currently working on releasing five cover songs within a couple months as well as working on several originals that will be released within the coming months,” guitarist Josh Douglas notes.
Douglas is also one of Emo Nite Brooklyn’s founding DJs, touring the country with that act along with Mighty Vices. Along with “Sweetness” the band recently released a cover of My Chemical Romance’s “I’m Not Okay (I Promise).”
The band plans to get back on the road in the coming months, with their cover of Cohead & Cambria’s hit “A Favor House Atlantic” in the can. They also recently released a bouncy, original track titled “Live It Up.”
Mighty Vices recently covered Fall Out Boy’s holiday classic “Yule Shoot Your Eye Out.” The band released their debut album Looking For An Exit in 2022 after beginning their music journey during the heart of the COVID pandemic.
The band came together in the New York area before relocating to Fort Wayne, Indiana to create music and social media content.
“Sweetness” is out everywhere here.
