Here are ten new releases you should be listening to this week!
Craig Finn – “Something To Hope For”
Album: I Need A New War (Partisan Records)
Craig Finn is known to many for his time in The Hold Steady, but since 2015, he has built a strong solo career. I Need A New War is his third solo album, and the lead single, “Something To Hope For,” is a promising peek at what will likely be a stellar record.
The Well – “Raven”
Album: Death and Consolation (Riding Easy Records)
Austin-based rock trio The Well write music that fans of heavy guitar riffs will adore. Put some reverb-heavy vocals in front of those riffs, and you’ve got a band that harkens back to the years of psychedelic rock while mixing in a hint of doom.
Helms Alee – “Interachnid”
Album: Noctiluca (Sargent House Records)
This single off Helms Alee’s new album is sure to please fans of Helms Alee and, more broadly, fans of Sargent House Records in general. It’s mathy, weird, and heavy, but still catchy.
Trade Wind – “Certain Freedoms”
Album: Certain Freedoms (Other People Records)
The title track to Trade Wind’s new album Certain Freedoms is a laid-back jam that builds up with interesting layers throughout. Trade Wind is a supergroup comprised of members of Stick To Your Guns and Stray From The Path, and this is their first album since 2016’s You Make Everything Disappear.
Ceres – “Me & You”
Album: We Are a Team (Cooking Vinyl)
Melbourne pop-rock band Ceres are back with their third LP of upbeat emotional tracks. The band’s ability to sound big and full even on a simple pop song really shines here on “Me & You,” the third track off of We Are a Team.
Gardsghastr – “Slit Throat Requiem”
Album: Slit Throat Requiem (Profound Lore Records)
Gardsghastr are a brand-new black metal band from the Profound Lore Records family. Slit Throat Requiem is their debut album, and it’s sure to make waves in the black metal scene. The title track, which clocks in over seven minutes, sounds murky and haunting in the beginning, then by the middle, it is brutal as hell.
Danko Jones – “I’m In A Band”
Album: A Rock Supreme (M-Theory Records)
It’s really easy to fall in love with this band. They’re about as goofy as Tenacious D, but don’t let that fool you; they really, really rock. “You might think I’m outrageous / that’s out of sight / you might think I’m silly / or just wound to tight / you might think I’m crazy / you might be right.” Those lyrics from “I’m In A Band” sum up Danko Jones’ music pretty well: it’s nuts, but they don’t care, and neither do we.
The Damned Things – “Cells”
Album: High Crimes (Nuclear Blast Records)
Loud, dirty, fast-paced rock ‘n’ roll. That’s what you get from this new song by The Damned Things, a supergroup featuring members of Every Time I Die, The Alkaline Trio, Fall Out Boy, and Anthrax. High Crimes is their first record in nearly a decade, and if this song is any indication, it’s really gonna rip.
Hash Redactor – “Good Sense”
Album: Drecksound (Goner Records)
Memphis based noise-pop group Hash Redactor are set to release their debut album today (they put out a demo in 2017). The album opener, “Good Sense,” will please listeners who are fans of a dark, grungy garage rock.
Kevin Morby – “No Halo”
Album: Oh My God (Dead Oceans Records)
Hand claps open this track, but a whole variety of sounds carry it to the end. Kevin Morby is one of the more creative singer-songwriters out there, and the way he incorporates a backing choir and a variety of wind-instruments into this song is delightful.
