Årabrot have dropped a new single, “Horrors of the Past,” from their forthcoming album, Of Darkness and Light set for release October 13. This iconic Norwegian duo consists of Kjetil Nernes and wife Karin Park. While the song’s melody and throwback sound evokes images of The Beatles, a chilling vibe of dread and terror runs through the tune.
Nernes states:
“The original out-of-tune iPhone demo was called ‘Beatles.’ The demo was made years ago. We are happy to see it still feels right.”
Nernes reveals the story behind the song:
“We were out driving and hit and killed a cat. Its fur covered the windshield. It was brutal. I had a vision of a metaphysical journey through a storm of animal fur. I couldn’t see a thing until symbols, and memories of the past suddenly emerged in front of me. I was working my way out of a nightmarish past.'”
Årabrot have collaborated with luminaries such as Stephen O’Malley and Lustmord, producers Steve Albini and Billy Anderson, and even won a Norwegian Grammy. The album’s title references Nietzsche’s Thus Spoke Zarathustra, a philosophical text centered on transcending our limitations.
