Birdmask, the solo work of Manuel Gagneux (Zeal and Ardor), has released a new single, “Recovery,” from his forthcoming EP, Tristan, dropping November 24.
Known for the avant-garde of Zeal and Ardor, Gagneux follows a different path with Birdmask, a path that consists of embracing and living in his own reality.
Gagneux states:
“With Zeal and Ardor, I’m acting as if I were a different person, whereas Birdmask is pretty much me and my gleeful stupidity and childish exploration. It’s closer to who I am in real life. It doesn’t really have that societal aspect that Zeal and Ardor has. It’s just: I feel bad today, so here’s my sadness, or I feel great today; here’s my glee.”
Listeners should expect more sadness than glee on Tristan, which shows Gagneux leaning into more subtle, melancholy tones. Fans need not worry though, since Gagneux will be releasing a second EP next year, entitled Isolde, which will showcase a more gleeful aspect of Birdmask.
