The Ghost Is Clear Records/Learning Curve Records released a four-way-split between Canyons, Great Falls, Dug, and Don’t Grow Old last Friday. Titled Stranded, the release is a glimpse into an over arching hopelessness resulting from events of the last few years and was mastered by Zach Weeks at God City. Purchase it here.
Great Falls, featuring members of Playing Enemy, Kiss it Goodbye, and Gaythiest, are a three-piece force in the Northwest noisecore scene. Hot off the scorching “Funny What Survives,” they offer a new single, “Water from the Flood,” to the Stranded split. Minneapolis two-piece Dug feature the rhythm section of defunct legends Buildings and offer two massive contributions, “I Have a Right to Destroy Myself” and “Rest.”
Side B finds two new cuts from Kansas City’s Canyons, “Bayak” and “Toast to the Eyes” The split wraps up with New Bedford, Massachusetts, hardcore/screamo outfit Don’t Grow Old.
The Ghost Is Clear and Canyons’ Bobby Johnson says the release is “All in all, a celebration of perseverance and determination to see any idea through despite setbacks, pitfalls, excuses. It is a moment in time shared by four bands who appreciate the love and opportunities and outlet that heavy music is to them.”
Canyons also released their cover of Rage Against The Machine’s “Bulls on Parade” via Bandcamp. All proceeds from sales of the track, which was mixed and mastered by Chris Common (of These Arms Are Snakes, Le Butcherettes, etc. and who donated his production talents and time), will be donated to benefit KCMO-based charity Steps Of Faith Foundation. Get it at Canyon’s Bandcamp.
According to Steps of Faith, “Beyond living life with a disability, the financial burden for an amputee can be extraordinary. Prosthetic limbs range from $10,000 to $100,000, so without health insurance, coming up with this amount of money can seem inconceivable. There are hundreds of simple, daily tasks the average person takes for granted, such as walking up stairs, riding a bike, or simply walking across the room. An amputee knows that even with superhuman strength or years of practice, those tasks can still be impossible without the right prosthetic fit and function. The unfortunate reality is that many amputees often don’t have health insurance, and the financial coverage provided by insurance companies is often not enough to cover the high cost of prosthetic needs. That’s where Steps of Faith (helps).”
Johnson says, “The band was messing around one night searching for a nu-metal song to play, and RATM’s ‘Bulls On Parade’ came up on a phone search. We all agreed it wasn’t a nu-metal track, but figured we’d give it a shot.
“When the opportunity came up to have it mixed and mastered by Chris Common and release it to benefit an incredible KCMO-based charity, we jumped at the chance.”
The cover comes on the heels of Canyons release of a six-song collection of Clutch covers last week.
