Cloakroom have announced a new album, Dissolution Wave, which coincides with the band’s 10th anniversary. Lead single “A Force At Play” introduces the sci-fi reality the band conceptualized for the album with the lush, shoegaze-inspired sound the group is known for.
Out January 28 on Relapse Records, Dissolution Wave considers a world where all art and abstract thought have been wiped out by the titular wave. Songwriters attempt to fill that artistic void, as the narrator of “A Force At Play” does around their work as an asteroid miner.
“We lost a couple of close friends over the course of writing this record,” says guitarist/vocalist Doyle Martin. “Dreaming up another world felt easier to digest than the real nitty-gritty we’re immersed in every day.”
The sonic world introduced by “A Force At Play” does little to lessen the Indiana-based trio’s reputation as purveyors of fuzz but ventures toward the dreamier, space rock edges of that sound rather than the sludgy terrain Cloakroom at times favors. Dissolution Wave, the band’s third album, is the group’s first with drummer Tim Remis, who joined in 2019.
