Iggy Pop has shared a new, bare bones video for “We Are The People.” The track, which comes from his 2019 album Free, features Pop reciting a poem written by Lou Reed in 1970.
The video is an apt pairing with nothing but a close-up, barely lit shot of Pop mirroring the sparse arrangement of piano and distant trumpet featured in the recording. Complete with Reed’s original lines like “We are the people without land / We are the people without tradition / We are the people who do not know how to die peacefully and at ease,” it’s much more Tom Waits or Leonard Cohen than Stooges or Ramones.
Pop will release a “test pressing” series of Free, limited to 340 copies, on March 7. The variant will include artwork in collaboration with Maurizio Cattelan and include a bonus 7″ featuring two unreleased tracks, Pop’s a capella rendition of “Brahm’s Lullaby” and “Epistle To Tromba.”
