News: Joshua Crumbly Announce New EP

Joshua Crumbly
Los Angeles and New York artist Joshua Crumbly announces a new EP, P.S. out on February 8 via Switch Hit Records. It’ll include collaborations with Samora Pinderhughes, Michael Rocketship and Little Dragon. Crumbly will also be performing a Brooklyn EP release show February 22 at The Sultan Room.
His latest single, “Steps,” features Samora Pinderhughes, who has collaborated with artists ranging from Common to Sara Bareilles. When asked about the track, Crumbly says, “It was so great to collaborate with my musical soulmate and brother Samora Pinderhughes. We met at 17 years old, both incoming freshmen at Julliard. I think we appreciate a subtlety in each other that is often overlooked by others. I sent Samora the instrumental track for “Steps” with no instructions and he just got it. This collaboration is such a long time coming, and all that time spent developing our artistry is reflected in the music.” “Steps” follows Crumbly’s single, “Morning” which was released late last year.

Joshua Crumbly began taking the stage at the young age of 10 in accompany of his saxophonist father. On this EP, he reconnects with the energy and outlook of youth. It isn’t much of a stretch for the uncategorizable bassist/composer Joshua Crumbly to look at music through the eyes of a child. Through a surprising confluence of circumstances, Crumbly’s new EP, P.S. embodies those childlike principles even more than usual.

It coincidentally combined with Crumbly musing on the next chapter of his life and career following his acclaimed 2020 debut, Rise, and his 2021 follow-up, ForEver. ForEver has been described as his “letter to the future,” Crumbly intends for this EP to be its postscript, as well as a bridge to his forthcoming third full-length album.

Crumbly’s take on P.S.:
“I was thinking of the stages of life and the experiences within it, even the stages of a day itself,” he recalls. “Most beginnings tend to be so youthful and innocent, but we can become so easily weighed down by the journey. I’ve come to realize that each and every stage is a beautiful one in its own way, but I find that getting back to a youthful outlook, taking steps to get back to the beginning, may be the way to enjoy things the most.”
This four-track EP came from a purchase of a Yamaha PSR-12 which is a synthesizer dating back to the late 1980s. Despite the usage by legends including Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea and George Duke, it only has 49 keys, and it’s almost toy-like due to the portability and easy accessibility. The EP was mixed by longtime collaborator Shahzad Ismail.
