Punk rock icon Laura Jane Grace released a new single yesterday called “Birds Talk Too.” It marks the fourth single off of her upcoming album Hole in My Head which is due out on February 16, following the previous singles “Dysphoria Hoodie,” “Hole in My Head,” and “Cuffing Season.”
Each single has shown a distinctly different style, with “Dysphoria Hoodie” being a powerful folk-punk track, “Hole in My Head” harkening back to Grace’s Against Me! days, and “Cuffing Season” being more of an indie-folk ballad. The latest single, “Birds Talk Too,” is more of a breezy indie-pop number, marking probably the catchiest and most upbeat of the singles released so far.
“Ten years ago, I started getting tattooed by a Japanese tattoo artist named Gakkin,” Grace explains about the new track. “I traveled all around the world getting the work done, literally starting with my feet and ending with getting my head tattooed in Amsterdam in July of 2022. At the end of our session, Gakkin gifted me a hand-painted Gretsch guitar covered in beautiful, intricate, swirling design. I took the guitar back to my hotel room and immediately wrote ‘Birds Talk Too.’ The lyrical references are all Amsterdam: Schipol is the airport; Rookies is my favorite cannabis cafe, and Champagne Haze is my favorite strain.”
