News: Me First and The Gimme Gimmes Cover ‘Estos Celos’

Me First and The Gimme Gimmes have released a punk rendition of Vicente Fernandez’s “Estos Celos.” The fiery rendition comes as a courtesy of their upcoming live album, ¡Blow It…at Madison’s Quinceañera!, releasing June 14 via Fat Wreck Chords. The album is already available for pre-order and you can get it here.

Frontman, Spike Slawson on “Estos Celos”:

“’Estos Celos,’ sung most famously by the great Vicente Fernandez, is a musical lament of jealousy, regret, and heartache, made all the more vivid by the excruciating detail of the lyrics (all the way down to the mole on his ex’s neck) and the delirious, burning emotion in the Gimmes’ new rendition. You may be asking yourself, ‘What, thematically speaking, does this have to do with a Quinceañera?’ and if you find the answer, please pass it along.”

Me First & the Gimme Gimmes

It’s been twenty years since Me First and The Gimme Gimmes have ruined Johnny’s Bar Mitzvah, and the punk rock’s premier cover band is back and ready to wreak havoc on another important coming-of-age ceremony, this time: a Quinceañera. Nobody there had even heard of the band and nobody knew waht to expect.

Spike Slawson on ¡Blow It…at Madison’s Quinceañera!:

“It was really tense for me going out to no applause…and people actually walking away when we were playing. A Quinceañera is a very celebrated and important event, not just in a young girl’s life, but in the whole family’s. Mom and Dad were great, but it took the uncles a little while to warm up to me and our off-color jokes, though I think eventually they got it. Our process is to cast the line out and bring people to the point of, and beyond, outward expressions of displeasure like booing, and then hopefully reel them back in by the end of the set.”

The album was recorded on July 15, 2023 at The Soap Factory in San Diego. With Joey Cape and Swami John Reis on guitar, CJ Ramone on bass, and Andrew “Pinch” Pinching on drums, the lineup is complete. This time, they also brought in a horn section, as courtesy of Keith Douglas and Jason Crane.
